They almost exclusively feed on seeds and feed their young seeds.  That is why they have Nest later in the year July-August, than most song birds as the seed isn't available earlier. When they lay their eggs they then hatch withing 2 weeks and then the young fledge 2 weeks later.  They use spider webs & the fluff from many seed heads to build their nests.

*DO NOT DEAD HEAD YOUR FLOWERS -If you want your gold finches to thrive they need the flowers to go to seed for their food.  Leave all seed heads and plants in the garden all winter so they will have food throughout the winter.
