Attracting Fireflies (lighting bugs, glow worms)

Creating the perfect environment for fireflies, (also known as lightning bugs, or glow worms)

  1. Provide them the habitat they need- they thrive in secluded moist, humid, organically rich environments.  To encourage them to stay in your area- have a space for tree leaves and other plant material to naturally decompose like the forest edge.  Planta a diversity of native plants of varying heights.  Female fireflies tend to send their light signals from taller plants.                                                                                         2. Don't Use Insecticides –Pesticides or herbicides, etc.                                               3. Turn Off the Lights –  Keep outdoor lights to a minimum so lightning bugs can communicate with each other.  Don't forget that some indoor lights may also penetrate to the outside so pull down the shades to keep it to a minimum. They attract mates using their light signals if there is too much light they can;t find their mate and won't reproduce.                                                                                                              4. Talk to your Neighbors – Fireflies are not limited to a single yard.  Encourage neighbors to join you in keeping these enchanting insects glowing.
