Sustainability

At Mystic Meadows Gardens, sustainability is the foundation of everything I do. As a woman-owned small business, I am deeply committed to ecological growing practices that support native biodiversity, healthy soils, and thriving pollinator communities. Here's what that means at Mystic Meadows Gardens.

🌿 NOFA Accreditation & What It Means

Mystic Meadows Gardens is proud to hold accreditation through the Northeast Organic Farming Association (NOFA) Organic Landcare Professional program. This accreditation recognizes my commitment to organic land care practices that protect soil health, water quality, and ecosystem integrity.

NOFA Organic Landcare Professionals agree to avoid synthetic pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers, and to use ecological approaches to land stewardship. What this means to you as our customer:  that our practices have been reviewed and meet rigorous ecological standards.

🌱 Ecological Growing Practices

I grow all of our plants using practices that work with nature, not against it:

  • No synthetic chemicals: I never use synthetic pesticides, herbicides, or fertilizers on our plants or land.
  • Integrated Pest Management (IPM): When pest pressure arises, I use IPM strategies — starting with the least invasive interventions and relying on ecological balance wherever possible.
  • Native plants only: I grow only true native species — no cultivars or nativars. This ensures the plants I sell provide the full ecological value that native wildlife depends on.
  • Ecologically sourced seeds:  seeds are sourced from regionally appropriate, ecologically responsible suppliers to maintain genetic integrity and local adaptation.  I am consistently working on growing out and harvesting more seeds on my farm each year.

🌾 Seed Sourcing & Provenance

I believe that where seeds come from matters.  Mystic Meadows Gardens seeds and plant material are sourced from trusted regional partners who share our commitment to ecological integrity:

  • Northeast Seed Collective
  • Wild Seed Project
  • Prairie Moon Nursery
  • Middlesex Conservation District
  • Native Plant Trust

By sourcing from these organizations, I ensure that the plants you receive are genetically appropriate for the Northeast region and have been grown with ecological care from the very beginning.

♻️ On-Farm Composting & Waste Reduction

Mystic Meadows Gardens produce and use our own on-farm compost to build healthy, living soil without relying on outside inputs. Composting closes the loop on organic matter, reduces waste, and feeds the soil food web that makes our plants thrive.

I am continually working to reduce waste across all aspects of my operation — from packaging to water use — because I know that every small choice adds up.

🦋 Supporting Pollinators & Biodiversity

Native plants are the backbone of healthy ecosystems. By growing and selling only true native species, I help my customers create habitat that supports:

  • Native bees and other pollinators
  • Fireflies and other beneficial insects
  • Birds, butterflies, and other wildlife

I also offer guidance on native plant substitutions for invasive species, helping customers make choices that actively restore ecological balance in their landscapes. The Attracting Fireflies page and Resources page offer additional guidance for creating wildlife-friendly habitats.

👩🌾 Woman-Owned Small Business

Mystic Meadows Gardens is a woman-owned small business rooted in a deep love for the natural world and a belief that small, local nurseries play a vital role in ecological restoration. When you buy from me, you're supporting not just a business, but a mission — to make native plants accessible, to educate our community, and to grow a healthier, more biodiverse landscape, one plant at a time.

Thank you for being part of this journey.
