Perennial with spectacular purple blooms(much smaller blooms than Northern Blazing Star) in late summer grows to 3 -5ft tall, If you want monarchs and also have milkweed. Plant it and they will come. (MMG also has the Native although Rare- Northern Blazing Star available in limited quantities)
Prefers: Full Sun, Moist soil (if your soil is nutrient rich it will grow to 5ft and will need staking- no need to fertilize for this plant to thrive)
Attracts: Butterflies (including Monarch which love this plant) Special value to native bees(has been known to attract many different species of native bees. The dry seed heads provide food to many birds.
DEER LOVE THIS PLANT!!! So try planting mountain mint around it to help deter the deer. Although if the eat it mid spring (chelsea chop) it will be a little shorter, not much though. This happened to me last spring, and the picture below shows the plant in the fall. Now it has mountain mint around it.
Companion Plants: Common milkweed, Showy Golden Rod(Monarch Favorites), Mountain Mint(to deter deer)
