Native Perennial Shrub is fast growing and can reach up to 15 ft high.
Early spring blooms (April) are pale yellow in dense clusters that bloom before the leaves form buds along the twigs. Flowers are followed by glossy red fruit. Both the fruit and foliage are aromatic. The leaves turn a colorful golden-yellow in fall.
Prefers: Full Sun, Part Sun to Shade(with some sun there will be more berries), Wet-Medium Dry Soil that is well drained
Benefits: Attracts Birds and Butterflies
Larval Host: Eastern Tiger Swallowtail, Spicebush Swallowtail Butterflies and Promethea silkmoth
A tea can be made from the aromatic leaves and twigs,and the dried and powdered fruit can be used as a spice.
