Buttonbush is a native deciduous shrub that grows up to 12ft tall and 8' wide. The tiny button like white flowers bloom all summer and turn red in the fall. The fall fruit is consumed by waterfowl and shore birds.
The foliage is poisonous to livestock and other animals.
Plant requirements: full sun to part shade, medium to wet soils and can tolerate shallow standing water for a short period of time.
Perennial
Great plant for rain gardens, wetland restoration or areas that are wet.
Benefits:
Frequented by skippers, monarchs, swallowtail and other butterflies and bees that happen to be passing by. Host plant for some of our largest and showiest moths including the titan sphinx, the hydrangea sphinx and the royal walnut moth.
Fruiting heads appear throughout the winter and are consumed by many waterfowl and shorebirds. Although the flowers and seeds are consumed, the foliage is poisonous to livestock and other animals.
