1lb of wool mixes into about 12 gallons of soil
Benefits/Uses
-
Natural slug & snail deterrent. Once the wool gets wet, it forms a mat-like barrier, which is irritating to slugs & snails repelling them. Apply it under your plants as a light blanket over the soil.
- Suppress weed growth. Apply it under your plants as a light blanket over the soil.
-
Water retention for plants in containers. Line the container with wool for water retention in the summer months saving water and time.
-
Sustainable alternative to peat moss, coconut coir, perlite (by preventing soil compaction giving roots room to breathe). For planting outdoors and transplanting: As you prepare your soil, before sowing, add the wool in/under the soil and mix thoroughly to prevent soil compaction and give the seedlings/plant roots room to breathe.
-
Helps bind soil when making soil blocks for planting seeds indoors or in a greenhouse. As you prepare your soil block mix, add the wool and mix thoroughly into your soil ingredient mixture before pressing into your soil blocks mold. The ratio should be approximately 1 part wool to 4 parts of your soil mix.
-
Fertilize naturally, and improve and enhance your soil health over time. As the wool breaks down it provides a slow release of nitrogen and other beneficial nutrients to your soil (from the wool). For seedlings: Use as a wicking fabric in the bottom of seed starting trays to help with optimal root growth. Wool can hold 20-30% its weight in water. So it reduces your water use and time to water. If you’re transplanting a potted plant, you can add it to the base of the pot before adding your soil. You can also line the sides of your pot. Wool can be added to indoor potted plants that don’t have drainage by filling those pots half full. For large pots, this works great because it makes them much lighter and easier to move. Add the wool and mix thoroughly into your soil ingredient mixture or at the bottom of pots.
