Native to Eastern US From CT South
It is a deciduous compact & fast growing tree . Found in MA although not Native(highly beneficial to wildlife). Grows up to 2ft per year if in ideal conditions.
Spring Blooming with Clusters of Stunning Pink flowers and heart shaped leaves that turn yellow in the fall. Grows 12-30 ft tall & 15-20 ft wide. Can take up to 5-7 years to get a full tree full of blooms. Young bark is smooth with white spots, mature bark is furrowed with scales.
Prefers: Full Sun to part sun with moist well draining soil (can tolerate salt spray from roads)will produce a compact and rounded tree with moist soil. Prune as needed in late winter after the coldest temps have passed.(it is always important to sterilize your tools before & after each use, it is crucial when pruning red buds)
Growing from seed-seeds need to be scarified using the hot water method then 60 days of cold stratification.
Benefits: Over 50 species of pollinators have been observed visiting red bud trees. Pollinated by long-tongued bees such as blueberry bees and carpenter bees. Some birds actually eat the flowers(they are filled with nectar). Host plant to several Moth & butterfly species. Many birds & squirrels eat the seeds when they appear. Generally deer resistant
