American Hazelnut - Corylus americana

MA Native Deciduous Perennial Shrub -It has a dense, mound-shaped, and is thicket-forming  Grows 6-12 ft. tall. Yellowish-brown catkins are showy in late winter and early spring. The female bloom is obscure. Edible nut with ragged papery husk. Fall color varies from bright yellow to deep wine-red. Blooms April, May, June

Can be pruned anytime.  Suckers from roots, so should be trimmed back regularly.

Prefers: PS/Shade with moist to dry well drained soil

Benefits:  Nuts are eaten by birds & squirrels    These shrubs are wind pollinated
