This Native perennial (to all New England States- although extirpated in RI) has a striking lavender, pink or white blossom that bloom in Clusters atop 2-5 ft stems from July to September. Also commonly called Bee Balm or Horse-Mint. The leaves have a minty scent, that is know to deter deer. Spreads easily through rhizomes and seeds (dead heading brings on new blooms).
Prefers: Full Sun to part shade, Medium to dry soil, tolerant of many types of soil
Benefits: Hummingbirds, Butterflies and Specialist native bees, Bumble bees, predatory wasps, small black sweat bees and hawk moths. Nectar Source
Host plant for the Raspberry pyrausta butterfly
Leaves can be boiled for tea, seasoning, chewed raw or dried; flowers edible.
The fragrant leaves can be used for perfume.
