Also known as Downy shadbush.  This bush/tree is an early spring bloomer  April-May with white downy blooms followed by berries in the summer and striking foliage in the fall.  It is considered a keystone tree. 

Prefers : Full, Partial, Shade, Medium moist to Dry Soil, Grows up to 25 ft

Loved by a large number of pollinators (92 species of caterpillars use this tree)

The berries are enjoyed by  humans, other mammals and at least 40 different species of birds. Host plant for Red-Spotted Purple Butterfly. The berries taste similar to blueberries. Usually doesn't bare fruit until years 3-5.

Companion repellent under plantings to help avoid damage from large mammals. (Milkweed, Mints (consider them in containers to reduce work of controlling their spread) Spotted cranesbill (Geranium maculatum), Sweet Fern, Foam flowers, Boneset

Deer may eat the berries, although not the plant
